What is canasta?

Canasta is a rummy-style card game from Uruguay and Argentina that became a worldwide craze in the 1950s. The name is Spanish for “basket”. Players collect sets of cards of the same rank, called melds, and try to build them into seven-card canastas. It is played with two decks and four jokers, by two, three or four players.

Canasta for 2 players

This game uses the standard two-player canasta rules. They differ from the four-player partnership game in three ways:

Everything else — melds, wild cards, red and black 3s, the frozen pile and scoring — works the same as in partnership canasta.

How to play canasta

Canasta is a rummy-style game: you collect sets of cards of the same rank, called melds, and try to grow them into seven-card canastas. This page uses the classic two-player rules.

  1. The deal. Two standard decks plus four jokers are shuffled together (108 cards). The dealer gives each player 15 cards, one at a time. Any red 3 is put face up and replaced. The next card is turned face up to start the discard pile and the rest form the stock. If that upcard is a joker, a 2 or a red 3, the pile is frozen and another card is turned up on top of it.
  2. Your turn. Draw two cards from the stock, or take the whole discard pile (see below). Then meld any cards you can, and finish by discarding one card.
  3. Melds. A meld is at least three cards of the same rank, with at least two natural cards and no more than three wild cards. You can add to your melds on any later turn.
  4. Canastas. A meld of seven or more cards is a canasta. With no wild cards it is a natural canasta (500 bonus); with wild cards it is a mixed canasta (300 bonus).
  5. Going out. Once you have two canastas you may go out by melding or discarding your last card. That ends the hand and both players score.

Wild cards, red 3s and black 3s

Taking the discard pile

The pile can be worth a lot of cards. To take it, you must use the top card straight away in a meld — either with a natural pair from your hand, with one natural card plus a wild card, or by adding it to one of your melds. Then the rest of the pile goes into your hand.

The pile is frozen when it contains a wild card (or before you’ve made your first meld). A frozen pile can only be taken with a natural pair matching the top card. You can never take the pile when a wild card or a black 3 is on top.

Your first meld

Your first meld of each hand must reach a minimum card value, which rises as your score grows:

Your game scoreFirst meld must be worth
Below 015 points
0 – 1,49550 points
1,500 – 2,99590 points
3,000 or more120 points

You can put down several melds at once to reach the minimum. Bonuses for red 3s or canastas don’t count towards it.

At the end of each hand you score the value of every card in your melds, plus bonuses: 500 per natural canasta, 300 per mixed canasta, 100 per red 3 (800 for all four), 100 for going out and 200 for going out concealed (melding your whole hand in one turn). Cards left in your hand are subtracted. The first player to reach 5,000 wins.

Canasta FAQ

Is this canasta game free?

Yes. It is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no download, app or account.

What is canasta?

Canasta is a rummy-style card game from South America, played with two decks and four jokers. You make melds of three or more cards of the same rank and build them into seven-card canastas. The first player or team to 5,000 points wins.

Can you play canasta with 2 players?

Yes. In two-player canasta each player gets 15 cards, draws two cards from the stock each turn and discards one, and needs two canastas to go out. This game uses those rules, with the computer as your opponent.

Can I play canasta against the computer?

Yes. You play classic two-player canasta against a computer opponent. It only knows its own cards and what is on the table, so it never peeks at your hand.

How many points do you need to win canasta?

The first player to reach 5,000 points wins the game. A game usually takes several hands.

What is a canasta?

A canasta is a meld of seven or more cards of the same rank. A natural canasta has no wild cards and scores a 500 bonus; a mixed canasta includes wild cards and scores 300.

What are the wild cards in canasta?

The four jokers and all eight 2s are wild. A meld can contain at most three wild cards and must always have at least two natural cards.

What do red 3s and black 3s do in canasta?

Red 3s are bonus cards worth 100 each (800 for all four), laid down as soon as you get them, but they count against you if you haven't melded. Black 3s block the discard pile for one turn and can only be melded when you go out.

What does it mean when the discard pile is frozen?

A frozen pile contains a wild card, or you haven't made your first meld yet. You can only take a frozen pile with a natural pair that matches the top card.

How much do you need for the first meld in canasta?

Your first meld must be worth at least 50 points when your score is between 0 and 1,495, 90 points from 1,500, 120 points from 3,000, and just 15 points if your score is negative.

Does the game save if I close the page?

Yes. Your game in progress is saved on your device, so you can close the tab and carry on later from the same hand.
